Stricter Penalties for Cycling Offences
Due to recent amendments to traffic laws (Road Traffic Act), penalties for riding a bicycle under the influence of alcohol have been significantly strengthened.
Violators may face up to 3 years of imprisonment or a fine of up to 500,000 yen, and such offenses may result in a criminal record.
In addition, riding a bicycle while using a smartphone, wearing headphones, or holding an umbrella is also subject to penalties.
Please note that having a criminal record may affect procedures such as visa renewal.
We strongly encourage you to follow all traffic rules and ride safely.
